Please also have your persuasive paragraph written.  When looking at the signs, think of what it reminds you of.  Take your connection and try to persuade either myself, a company, or a school to do something about the issue you are presenting.

Inspiration for my friends

Homework for Tuesday November 22

I would like you to make sure you find a good book and read for 30 minutes tonight.  This will help you prepare for our upcoming book talks!

Please make sure you have your jot notes done for your personal narrative.

Please have your history test signed by your parent/guardian.

Also, ensure you respond to the following 3 questions from "The Nest"...

ÊMake sure you have recorded 3 connections you made while reading the text.  What type of connection were they?
ÊWhat judgment or opinion did you make about a character or event?  Support your judgment or opinion with connections to your background knowledge or experience.
ÊExplain how making connections helps the reader understand what is read.

Homework for tonight

I want to first commend you all for the excellent participation in our class today!  A lot of you had some great ideas and constructive things to share with your peers.  This creates a rich learning enviornment for you and for your friends.

I also want to share how proud I am of the whole class for welcoming Alyssa to our class and our school!  Talking to her after school, she had a smile on her face and said she had a good day.  Let's continue to make sure everyone leaves with a smile and can say they had a great day at Eastdale!  Great job Grade 7/8 for being such great friends!

Now for the homework...

Please read the story, "The Nest" in your language text book.  I would like to respond to the Reflecting Questions at the end of the story.  This includes creating a Graphic Organizer like the one on page 9.  I would recommend putting the title, "The Nest" in the middle of your page and drawing bubbles around it to write your connections.  I would like to see 3 connections you made.  One should be a text-to-self connection, another should be a text-to-text connection and the last should be a text-to-world connection.  You may add more if you like as well.

The last task you have is to plan a personal narrative.  Take one of your text-to-self connections and tell me about how you related to the story in point form.  For example, if you related to how Jimmy supported his friend Paul, you may have a personal narrative about a time when you supported a friend.  Jot down point forms to describe the sequence of events of your story.

Being Leaders and Stepping Up!

Just a quick reminder that we have a History test coming up Wednesday.  Make sure you look over your notes this weekend and refer to the study sheet!

We are finishing our culminating task, writing a Fairy Tale, and will be starting our new unit on Stepping Up and making a difference.  We have been writing, self and peer editing, and publishing our best work!

We will be making Glogs next week in class and will focus on Anti-Bullying which will be a theme next week at Eastdale. I'm looking forward to the great work that I've seen over the past few days from the class.

Grade 7/8 have been stepping up and acting like leaders at Eastdale!  Keep up the great work!

Hoping all my students are happy today...

Weekend thoughts

In Math, Ms. J has started the measurement strand and will be investigating area and perimeter.  Here are some links to websites that students could try to help them gain experience with this topic!

Area of rectangles and parallelograms

Area of triangles and trapezoids

In Literacy we are working on our culminating task which is to write a Fairy Tale.  Here is a graphic organizer we used in class to help start writing our Fairy Tales.  This tool is used to brainstorm the main points of your Fairy tale and help organize our ideas.  Then we are able to move on to the "Pre-writing" phase where we add details and start writing!

A great day in Grade 7/8

Wow! What a great start to the rest of the year.  We had a community circle today in class that was used to encourage community building and ensuring everyone feels like a part of the class.

As a teacher, I was able to find out a little more about my new students.

A few of our favourite things included: Sports, Xbox, Piano, Acro, Sleeping, Cottages, and Friends (to name a few)!

Tomorrow we will be looking closer at our Fairy Tales.  Most of the class seems to be working on their story skeleton and moving onto the pre-writing phase.  I will be reading an original Fairy Tale tomorrow and going over the traits that I will be looking for in their culminating task.

In History, we will be doing a review of the content covered so far.  We will be answering questions and looking in depth at the discovery of New France.  This will help with upcoming assessments for History.
